Don’t let this 4th of July take away your independence

4th of JulyThis weekend marks the 240th anniversary of our independence from Britain in 1776 and with the holiday comes family gatherings, cookouts, fireworks and of course celebrating by drinking your favorite alcoholic beverage.

As always I strongly encourage you to take a cab, designate a driver or rent a limousine to enjoy festivities if you plan on drinking to ensure a fun, safe holiday weekend. After all planning ahead by designating a driver is far cheaper than paying for a DUI Lawyer, court costs, going to jail, and running the risk of having an ignition interlock installed on your car.

Last year alone highway patrol, sheriff’s deputies and other law enforcement officers arrested nearly 400 people on suspicion of a DUI on the 4th of July and I’m certain that they will be out in full force again this year. With increased patrols why would you want to ruin an otherwise enjoyable holiday sitting in a jail cell in Phoenix facing DUI charges?

Planning on celebrating on the water? July the 4th is one of the two highest attendance days on the lakes which is all the more reason to practice safe boating and that includes the abstinence of consuming alcohol while boating. Operating a watercraft while drinking harbors many of the same harsh DUI penalties as operating a motor vehicle. The legal limit for blood alcohol content (BAC) is .08 and Extreme DUI is a BAC of .15 and above. If you are found guilty of drinking while operating a watercraft you could receive a fine of up to $2500 and a jail sentence of up to six months. Subsequent convictions may carry even more severe penalties. Click here to review the Arizona Boating Laws and regulations to ensure a safe holiday.

I wish you a fun, safe 4th of July however, if you do end up facing DUI charges in Phoenix over the holiday, please click here to contact me or call (480)729-1683 for a free legal consultation.
